Inception (Movie Review)

Inception

Inception

Inception was as good as the reviews said although I wouldn’t call it my best movie of 2010. I should think that I was impacted by some of the other movies that I’ve caught this year. Christopher Nolan does a great job with this gripping actionesque thriller that does a real mind-job on viewers with its metaphysical concept on what reality is.

Inception is equal parts thriller, action and drama all rolled into one. Leonardo DiCaprio does another bang-up job in the lead role here and the way Nolan ties the tense moments is brilliant just because of the movie’s concept of dreams within dreams. Ellen Page deserves a worthy mention and it’s great seeing Nolan pulling from his regular pool of actors with Ken Watanabe & Michael Caine (in a cameo) on board.

Really good stuff and definitely worth picking up when it comes on Blu-Ray or DVD. In this case I’ll most likely pick it up on DVD cos’ I don’t think it’ll justify a hi-res disc purchase. I give Inception a 4 out of 5.

Shutter Island (Movie Review)

Shutter Island

Shutter Island

Ho-hum. Shutter Island was a complete waste of time. It was slow-moving, had a “What?! I wasted 2 hours of my life” ending and pretty much was an un-excellent use of RM12 at the cinema yesterday afternoon.

I had heard some good things about the movie including the fact that it has some sort of plot-twist. Sigh… unfortunately not even Leonardo DiCaprio’s acting could save this movie from being a sleepy affair.

To think I actually caught this one in TGV KLCC and paid RM11.50 in parking for the 5 hours or so I was parked there. I didn’t even buy anything from Kinokuniya or the RM150 Legends Class Devastator that Hasbro just released!!! Aaaaah!

I give Shutter Island a very poor 1 out of 5.

My 2010 Movie Hit List Pt 2

Aaaah! I’ve finally managed to catch up on some trailers off Apple.com so here’s an addendum to my list of movies that I’m looking forward to this year.

Daybreakers Daybreakers
I never thought I’d wanna watch a movie like this but after checking out the trailer I must say that Ethan Hawke’s latest looks promising. Vampires. Humans. A somewhat post-apocalyptic future where humanity is the last of its kind. It has all the hallmarks of a good exciting big-screen romp. I can’t wait!

Inception Inception
Batman Begins & The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan returns with this interesting movie that has a premise which I have yet to decipher. The trailer is really cool and piques your curiosity enough to actually wanna watch this one. Oh, the movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio in case you don’t know.

Iron Man 2 Iron Man 2
What can I say. I loved Robert Downey Jr. in the 1st one and I’m definitely onboard for the 2nd instalment.Jon Favreau definitely gets what Iron Man is all about.  Marvel Studios is doing a bang up job with their franchises and there’s lots to look forward to in the next 2 years with Thor and The Avengers in the pipeline.

I just caught Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus last night so look out for a review in a bit. I didn’t like the movie but I guess I’ll leave my thoughts for later when I get down to writing my review.

Enjoy the trailers. I certainly did.

Dare We Make a Difference?

What are we but human beings? What are but just people who want a life for ourselves? Self-centred that’s what we are … it’s something that has been bothering me a lot even as I struggle with myself. This is the question that I find myself asking; “Are we so caught up with ourselves that we fail to look at the world around us?”

Blood Diamond.

Blood Diamond.

I just finished watching Blood Diamond a few minutes ago. Seeing the reality of what we are capable of in a movie punches the message through more than reading about it or hearing about it can. It’s rare to see a film that does in an age when all audiences are interested in is being entertained. Blood Diamond is a powerful movie but more importantly it talks about our man’s struggle with self. As much as it is a movie about conflict diamonds it is also a movie that deals with humanity. DiCaprio’s character depicts what I believe to be a problem that we all have. The problem of “self”.

We can do more in life. I refuse to believe that we are all just supposed to raise a family, earn a living and end up returning to whence we came. We are all able to do so much more. To care so much. To love so much more. To make a difference in this twisted, messed up world.

This is the hard question that I ask myself even as I make my way through this world. As much as I want to be with someone who’ll love me back, to one day have a family that I can provide for and to make a difference in this world; I find myself lapsing into myself where there’s nothing but me in it. I am glad that I have walked the path I have walked so far. And I am thankful for the opportunity and the place where I’m at; that through what I do with my small record label and through my own life least I’m able to touch some lives. It’s the least I can do after all God has given me.

If you’re reading this. I hope you too can do something … that you can act to make a difference. Join me. I am doing a small part and you can too. Let’s do something together.
