Celebrating Iron Man Month

Good news!

Iron Man Month at Marvel.com

Iron Man Month at Marvel.com

I was driving down the LDP just past 1U and noticed much to my surprise that Iron Man 2 actually opens early in Malaysia. If the billboard is correct, Iron Man 2 hits us April 30th! Awesome!!!

I suspect this would be the biggest movie for me this year especially since I’m such a big fan of the first movie. To date I think I’ve watched my Iron Man Blu-ray 10 times at least in the past 2 years. In fact, Iron Man was the very first movie I picked up on Blu-ray so I have a very special place in my heart for the franchise.

To celebrate the coming of Iron Man 2, here are three avatars from the Iron Man universe (for Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, GoogleTalk, etc) and three 480 by 640 wallpapers that would fit a phone that supports that resolution (I’m using em’ now on my HTC Touch Pro).

Have fun!

Penang, Oh Penang

The Penang Bridge

The Penang Bridge

Oowah! Driving up to Penang was quite an experience with family members in tow but it was FUN, FUN, FUN. The past 2 days have been really awesome. My uncle’s birthday celebration was a music-filled blast that had his guests groovin’. Ha ha! The crowd was made up of older folk and they really enjoyed themselves on Friday night at the Penang Old Free Association. I’ve got videos and photos to prove it! Look out for them soon.

Yesterday was just pure gluttony. Here’s what we had starting with breakfast and ending with dinner:

  • Hokkien mee (prawn mee) & fried kuey teow at Kim San Coffeeshop for breakfast
  • Assam laksa in Balik Pulau for lunch
  • Lok lok, pasembur, crab popiah and fried kuey teow at Padang Brown
  • Superb coffee, roti bakar and soft-boiled eggs at a simple alley way stall called Toh Soon Cafe somewhere in China Town
  • We capped the day off with a big family makan in a simple Chinese restaurant in Gelugor

It’s been a good trip to Penang. It was good to be around my extended family as we celebrated my uncle’s 80th birthday. It was good to be able to listen on all my uncles & aunties and their stories. It was good to hang out with my cousins. I can’t put up any pictures yet cos’ I’m really annoyed by my HTC Touch Pro cos’ it went bonkers on Friday morning before I left and I can’t sync anything anywhere now. I didn’t have time to fix it before I left which nags me somewhat.I’ll probably have to do a hard-reset and reinstall all my software when I get back. I must remember to copy out all the GPS co-ordinates I picked up here in Penang. It’ll be such a waste cos’ some of the food discoveries here are just meant to be shared.

I’m definitely gonna need that run tomorrow morning when I get back to KL.

Singapore Ho!

Good morning everyone!

I’m writing this whilst I’m on the bus to Singapore. It’s 8.51am now and I’m about 2 hours away from Singapore. Just discovered to my horror that not all the seats on Aeroliner have plug points. Thankfully the seat in front of me was empty so I swapped seats! Bwa ha ha ha ha! I’m really looking forward to Singapore. Here’s what I have planned for the next 3 days:

  1. Fireworks & countdown at Marina Bay tonight
  2. Sentosa Island tomorrow
  3. Jurong Birdpark and the Singapore Zoo (maybe)
  4. The much heard about Night Safari
  5. Shopping on Saturday (Funan IT and maybe Orchard for some clothing)

After I drop off my luggage at Hotel 81 Bencoolen, the day starts and I daresay it’s gonna be fun. I hope I can get data access with the Singtel Prepaid SIM that I’ll be purchasing when I get in to Singapore.

Anyways, it’s been a good year overall. Work’s been a blast especially my experiences working with Microsoft on launching Windows 7. Did I mention I love Windows 7 even though I have a Mac? Anyways here are some things that I’m thankful for as I close 2009 and enter 2010:

  1. A tonne of movies with UP, Star Trek & Sherlock Holmes being the most notable
  2. The great friends I have especially my buddies J-son and Roland
  3. My matte black DSi and Metroid Prime Pinball
  4. Windows 7 & Snow Leopard
  5. The Windows 7 experience at work
  6. Blu-rays!
  7. Better performance at work and great colleagues – am definitely much better at delegation and am more confident now in the things I can contribute at the office
  8. Cluster leadership
  9. Finally getting up the 440 Records website with the help of WordPress
  10. My HTC Touch Pro and Unlimited Mobile Internet with Maxis

It’s been an awesome year but it’s been also a challenging one. The one thing I look forward to in 2010 is more restedness in God. Of everything in life; I guess that’s what I find lacking in my life.

Here’s to a good new year’s eve to all of ya, don’t drink too much and don’t strain those necks staring at fireworks in the sky … Happy New Year and I’ll see ya’ll in 2010!

HTC Touch Pro Gripes

I can’t help but write this during office hours because I am very annoyed by this weird bug that causes me to lose my Favourite contacts on my phone every single time it happens. Here’s what happens to my phone whenever I’m in the office:

  • My Touch Pro is hooked up to my PC to charge & sync emails, etc all day in the office
  • It syncs every once in awhile to get updated mails from Microsoft Outlook 2007
  • When a sync happens lately this error message pops up ever so often

There has been a change made on your server that requires you to re-synchronize all items on your device. All changes made since your last successful sync will be lost.

  • The phone goes through entire re-sync process which takes ages and the end result is that I lose all my list of favourite contact numbers every single time it occurs; meaning I have to select my favourite numbers again & again & again

Just a few days ago a weird thing happened where lots of contacts on my phone went missing but they still existed on Outlook and a sync didn’t do anything to solve the problem. I restored the contacts to my phone from my Mac using Missing Sync but when I did a sync with my office laptop Windows Mobile Device Manager duplicated the contacts on both my phone and Outlook 2007! Gaaaaah! To fix the problem I had to manually remove the duplicate numbers but the good thing was I also did some spring-cleaning on my contact list at the same time. Sigh. Maybe I should get an iPhone even though I am quite happy with how Windows Mobile works when it comes to doing actual “work” stuff. I really love the physical QWERTY keyboard on the Touch Pro and I hate touchscreen-based keyboards. What’s going on here? It’s such a weird problem that’s widespread and no one seems to be doing anything about it. *looks over at Microsoft and other smartphone makers*

The dumb ass solution...

The dumb ass solution...

It is annoying and I am pretty sick of having to go thru this on an almost daily basis lately. One suggestion that I found online was to turn of email sync which is kinda stupid as the reason why I have a smartphone is so I can stay up to date on emails on Outlook without having to pop open my notebook all the time. The most useful thing about synching emails is so I can read them and catch up on stuff when I’m on the go. So much for working smart! *sighs* An official forum thread I looked up had no proper solution too. Gyaaah!

I’ve been looking into this on and off for months but to no avail. Has anyone come across any solution to this problem? It’s A N N O Y I N G ! ! ! !  H A L P ! ! !

Marvels

It’s been a long day today but thankfully a good one. I’ve been out of the house since 12pm at both IJN and KL General Hospital and am very, very relieved & thankful that my dad’s angiogram went without a hitch. The blockage is mild and treatable through medication plus changes in diet I guess. My mom should be discharged tomorrow too so yeah it’s a huge relief that both my parents will be out of hospital too.

My HTC Touch Pro

My HTC Touch Pro

I’m thankful for the hi-tech stuff I have that have been great tools especially when I’m on the go. My battle-scarred HTC Touch Pro is truly a God-send as I’ve been keeping tabs on work emails as they come in. The only thing is that I’ve gotta re-organise them on my work laptop again cos’ my office isn’t on Exchange Server. Here’s how I work around the limitations I have currently with work email with Windows Mobile 6.1’s email client.

  1. My HTC Touch Pro syncs normally with Outlook 2007 so that’s no bother.
  2. I configure a separate email account that checks my work email account every 30 minutes or so. Think of this as a temporary place on my phone for mails that come in when I’m away from my PC. Of course for this to work your PC needs to either be off or Outlook set to offline mode so that emails stay on the server.
  3. Of course my phone is also configured with separate accounts for both Gmail & Hotmail for personal emails.

It’s a horrible workaround I know but that’s how I get around not having push or MS Exchange for work. The strange thing is that I really find it funny that I can’t get the default  account that’s set to sync with Outlook to pull email in and still remain in sync  but I figure it’s probably a limitation with Windows Mobile 6.1.

The Touch Pro has been such a great tool and with all the family emergencies that I’ve been having in the past 2 years, it’s been a great companion for both work & play. In fact I even use it as a modem both on my Windows 7 machine & my Macbook. It’s a fairly simple process getting a Windows Mobile smartphone to work as a modem for my Mac by setting up Bluetooth PAN (Personal Area Network) that my Macbook can connect to.

As much as Apple & Microsoft like to bash each other in their ad campaigns, it’s a nice surprise to learn that both Windows & Mac OS X actually play really nicely with each other. I haven’t yet gotten around to figuring out how to get Windows 7 to connect to my mobile as a modem via Bluetooth but so far I haven’t had the need for it as it works just fine via USB.

Other technical marvels that I am thankful for today are:

  1. PockeTwit (my preferred Twitter client for Windows Mobile)

    PockeTwit

  2. My Nintendo DSi together with The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Elite Beat Agents & Disgaea DS

    A Trio of DS Goodness

  3. Palringo that connects to GoogleTalk, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger & surprise, surprise Facebook Chat!

  4. Windows 7 (which I have a slightly unhealthy fascination for these days & incidentally doesn’t have any relation to any of the events of today)

My Favourite OS Right Now - Windows 7

I am thankful today. Really. It’s been a long day. Tiring. But it was worth it to be able to be there for my parents. On top of that I have these technological marvels that let me keep my responsibilities at my job somewhat whilst at the same time helping me to pass the time a lil’ bit more interestingly at both hospitals today.

*Yawns* I’m tired out now so I guess it’s time to go to bed. I’ve been sleeping early the past few days and waking up at around 6.30am every day which is a good thing.

Cheerios & g’nite everyone!

Mobile Number Portability. Faith Too?

Switch to DiGi.

Switch to DiGi.

Mobile Number Portability has just hit Malaysia. Officially launched just last Wednesday now Malaysians everywhere can switch from one provider to another and keep their existing mobile number. That’s a HUGE boon to consumers everywhere and honestly I am leaning towards switching to DiGi but will probably wait till their 3G services are launched.

The uber cool HTC Touch Pro.

The uber cool HTC Touch Pro.

I’ll most likely be buying over my bud J-son’s new HTC Touch Pro (as he can’t send emails out through it) and looking at how things are at work; getting an unlimited data line to access email and the web would be quite cool. I am heading out for meetings a little more these days and quite possibly I’d see an increase in that as I start liaising with clients more. Emailing them on the go is pretty good too cos’ sometimes I’m at church or somewhere else and taking some time in-between activities to answer emails would help pace things for me at work. There’s just a tonne to do in the office and sometimes it’s just quite overwhelming.

Convenience is something that all of us look for but that’s not true when it comes to God. Sometimes it seems as if God can be a convenience in life for some of us. I’m learning a lot more that God is NOT a convenience. He has good plans for us yes and I believe that how we feel and what we go through is on His mind too BUT our comfort & happiness is NOT the most important thing to Him. His relationship with me is what it’s all about. It’s about BEING not about striving. That seems so contradictory … how can I be if I do not first get there? I’m still figuring this out about God but I’m glad that I have Him.

As much as I struggle in my faith to make it real and to rest in Him; I have that deep assurance that He is the constant in my life. And I can be 100% honest with Him about the way I feel and the things I go through because He is the ONLY one who does not judge me. In Him there is true acceptance. Unlike Mobile Number Portability where we can switch from one provider to another; there is only one provider in life; God. I can’t explain it 100% but believing in God is not just about knowing it in our heads and hearts; it’s also about stepping out and putting a measure of faith in Him. I believe that’s what the Bible talks about when some of the authors in there write about how blessed are those who believe even though they have not seen.

I’m off to Bentong today. An old classmate from school just got married today and the dinner is on tonight. I have mixed emotions about seeing my old friends; I just hope they don’t egg me about whether or not I’m seeing someone. That question is always hard to take … especially at weddings.

Ta!

for everyone
Googling & Reading … All At Once
I simply love my Google Reader. I don’t waste time now surfing over to sites like Gamespot or to read up on news. This is the first time in my life ever where I’m more in touch with things in the world than I’ve ever been in my entire life. Good for me huh?
Check out Google Reader now … you won’t regret it. Really. Truly. Won’t. Regret. It. NUFF said …
If you don’t know what a RSS feed is, well it’s basically a XML feed (if I remember correctly) that allows readers to pick up news updates from websites. Notable RSS feeds that I am subscribed to on Google Reader are http://www.thestar.com.my, http://www.gamespot.com, http://www.gamespy.com & http://www.1up.com. Fortunately most of my updates come in over The Star and I get instant access to Business, Entertainment, Nation & World news pieces. Nifty huh?
On another note … I think I’ve fallen in love with the HTC Diamond Pro (it’s called the Touch Pro in the U.S.) … ha ha!
Shamelessly Stolen JPG from HTC.com
I really like the keypad. After messing around with J-son’s phone so much … I’ll sum it up in two simple words. I LIKE! Even though I am a big Apple fan, I must say that I like what HTC has done with the Diamond Pro and how speedy it is. Windows Mobile has come a long way since its inception. I am very impressed.
Time to go to bed! I’ve had a long day and it’ll be even longer tomorrow if I don’t get some sleep.Zzzzzzz …
